Structuring A Screenplay

Wed 5 May 2021   6:00pm - 8:00pm
Part II: Fri 7 May 2021   6:00pm - 8:00pm
Part III: Thu 6 May 2021   6:00pm - 8:00pm

In this TWO-PART WORKSHOP, participants will evaluate their screenplay concept (whether it be a short film, feature film or TV pilot) and apply it to an existing story structural model. They will be given lessons on a screenplay’s basic plot structure, the major emotional beats that exist within films, and the narrative function of various film techniques. Participants will leave with a better understanding of film storytelling — visually shaping their characters’ emotional journeys and creating plot lines that support their project’s themes.

Participants will map out their lead character’s external and internal journey. They will assess their work’s strengths, as well as places where there could be improvement. Using narrative structure as a guide, they will receive suggestions on various plot points — in the hopes of shaping a concise, efficient and emotional story.

Participants will walk away with a course booklet outlining the lessons in narrative structure — so that they have a reference guide after the workshop’s completion. All participants are encouraged to partake in Structuring a Screenplay (Advanced) to evaluate a fully completed short film screenplay in greater detail.

Please arrive at the workshop with a general concept of your screenplay.
