Connie Oreamuno is a Toronto-based artist merging movement, film and audio-visual design for live music, choreography and installations. She is drawn to colour, dream states, genre blending, alternate realities and how different worlds and practices can intersect. Over the past year, she has primarily worked with projection design and mapping for installations, film, concerts and multimedia dance parties.
What led you to filmmaking? (or other artistic practice?)
I was injured while in school for dance and I started gravitating more towards the production side of creating. I was playing with cameras and making short-concept videos of my friends and I dancing. I’ve always really loved film and merging the two practices made sense, and was really intriguing for me. Over time, my playing with video got more experimental and I started using footage I shot as a floor projection for a dance piece. Eventually it snowballed into projection mapping and digital creation, which is what I’ve currently been working with the most. But I feel I always go back to thinking about how pieces of film and movement can inform projection design and vice-versa, and the ways in which they can merge.
What kind of stories do you want to tell?
I feel I’m really visually driven, especially with colour, dreams and the ethereal. I’m really interested in how a blend of concepts and media can come together, especially in an unexpected way.
What is one piece of advice you would give to your younger artist-self?
To dig deeper into your creativity, and don’t be afraid to ask questions.
