THESE ARE MY REPARATIONS

Conceptualized by Kim Ninkuru, “These Are My Reparations” is a sci-fi*, multi-media installation that directly addresses the way in which Black feminine people are taken, used and distorted for mass consumption. This work uses a hybrid of film, sculpture, sound, and online interactive media to tell the story of Honey, a Black woman, who is abducted by “The Company”, a corporate entity built to reproduce sound and visual content for the purposes of social control. Taking place in a future where live entertainment doesn’t exist, Honey is forced to sell her image and music to be used by an AI robot named RadioHead, which is accessed by the rich elite.

Exhibition Dates: January 13, 2023 – February 11, 2023
Opening Event: January 14th, 2023

Through resilience, self love, and community, A Space for Us explores youth perspectives on Anti Racism and Anti Hate. Culminating Media Art for Youth for 2022, the show presents the work of 10 youth in Toronto who engaged in the program through the summer and fall. By reflecting on their lived experience, the youth effect solidarity to create safe spaces.

Media Art for Youth is a 2-year media arts program for youth in Toronto of the Arab Community Centre of Toronto and Charles Street Video. Within a responsive space, the program builds youths’ capacity in storytelling through workshops and one-on-one mentorship in photography and animation film to produce counter narratives of hate and racism.

Location: CSV Gallery – 76 Geary Avenue

CSV Media Art Production Grant – Deadline February 2023

CSV is proud to hold it’s third media art creation grant in an effort to support CSV member media art projects. After a successful launch in 2019, CSV is undertaking its fourth Media Arts production grant. The funds are intended for production or post-production purposes. A single project can receive a maximum of $3,000 in equipment credits, a $500 production materials budget, and a $1000 artist fee. Calling all Indigenous filmmakers – expand your filmmaking experience by creating a 5-10 min short!

Expand your familiarity with new technologies and work hands-on with the knowledgeable staff at Charles Street Video (CSV) who will train you on how to use new equipment and editing software.

This mentorship is an opportunity to create a new short work (5-10 minutes), to premiere at the annual imagineNATIVE Film + Media Arts Festival from October 17-22, 2023 in Toronto!

CSV Member Highlight

Madi Piller – is a filmmaker, animator, and independent curator currently living and working in Toronto, Canada. Born in Lima, Peru. Her abstract, nonrepresentational and poetic images are drawn from film explorations in Super 8, 16mm and 35mm, as well as photography and video. The resulting imagery is strongly influenced by diverse animation techniques and styles.

Madi is founding member and lead Artistic Director at PIX FILM Collective, a community advocate, helping to organize and inspire others to share conversations old and new innovations for which she created the PIX FILM in 2015 the Studio Immersion Program, supporting more than 25 artists to date, with financial support of The Petman Foundation.

Madi has also a supportive role in the production of an animated LGTBQ web-series How to Get a Girl Pregnant directed by Barbara Taylor.

Her Curatorial projects include: Eleven in Motion: Abstract Expressions in Animation (2009), Hello Amiga (2012), OP ART Re-Imaged: Imaginable Spaces(2014), and The Frame is the Keyframe: Frame Anomalies (2016). What led you to filmmaking? (or other artistic practice?)

Watching the light changing in an ambient inspired me to create, not just make films. Many times just prompt me to think.

What kind of stories do you want to tell?

Non-linear, just memories.

What is one piece of advice you would give to your younger artist self?

Be happy with what you are doing because it will be hard anyway.
