CSV welcomes artists interested in promoting dialogue and experimentation about media art. Through our Maker Space Program, CSV offers an open door opportunity to engage with our space, equipment and community.
This year, we are partnering with Images Festival and invite you to respond to their annual theme Metabolizing Moving Images with this thematic prompt:
Metabolizing Moving Images prompts:
Enzymes, compost, digestion, Salivate, nourish, chew, chew, swallow, Regurgitation, recontextualize, spam, Agitate, glycate, rot, rot faster, Blooming, mycelia, apocalypse, apocalypse again, Transfusion, bio-hacking, migrating media, move throughness, Self-preserving, preservation, fermentation, becoming indigestible, Constipation, bodily, shit, Intake, out put, those leakiest of permeabilities, Processing poison, sick celluloid, vinegar syndrome, distillation, Eat me, spoil me, spit me out
The selected resident artist will develop new work in response to the thematic prompt above ^^. Work produced during this residency will be open to the public during the Images Festival, happening April 9th - 13th, 2026 and can include various artist activations.
We are interested in supporting projects with a focus on media art (creation, discussion, and exploration), creating collective artistic spaces, and experimental/dialogical work.
We’re currently looking for hybrid exhibitions that could include installation work and/or live performance (ie. Interactive Arts, Projection Mapping, Immersive Sound, Experimental Music, Performance Art, Experimental Dance, and more) installation at Charles Street Video held during the Images Film Festival.
This opportunity includes:
- Up to $2000 in CSV Equipment Credit
- Artist fee
- Waived membership fee or free renewal for the year
- Staff support
- and artist activations from Exhibition (available upon request).
Charles Street Video is committed to equitable programming and hiring practices and encourages individuals from traditionally marginalised communities to apply for this position. Among others, we invite BIPOC and members of ethnic minorities, women, LGTBQIA2S+ people, and newcomer-Canadians.
More on the Images Festival: Images Festival is a non-profit, artist-led festival dedicated to experimental film, media arts, contemporary art, and the spaces in which these forms coexist. Images’ programming interrogates the conditions of contemporary moving image culture, and provides a platform for artists, filmmakers, curators, and other practitioners to engage with experimental practices in both form and content. - Selection Criteria -
- The peer-reviewed jury is looking for proposals of exhibits that make unconventional, original and/ or unique interventions in the media arts landscape. The criteria used to measure such contributions inevitably varies.
- Artists' applications nevertheless are enhanced by their clarity of vision, sense of purpose and urgency, the completeness and 'ready-to-go' state of the project, demonstrable ability on the artist's part to see the project through, and the strength of the support material. The exhibition / presentation of the work will be taken into consideration if it forms a component or primary part of the application.
- Available funds and credit will generally be awarded to one project per open call. At its discretion, the jury may choose to award partial funding to more than one project.
- CSV acknowledges that most projects that meet the program's criteria will nonetheless not receive funding; we offer no warranty. There are more good applications than available funds.
- All Juror comments made during the decision-making process are confidential and will not be released; the jury's decisions are final.
- Chosen artist(s) must be present for their exhibition 3 of the 5 days (Thursday; 6 - 8 pm, Friday; 6pm until 8 PM, Saturday 11am until 4 PM, Sunday; 11am until 4PM, and Monday 6pm until 9 PM )
For successful applicant(s):
- Prior to releasing a grant, CSV requires the member to sign a contract that outlines the support CSV will provide and the responsibilities of the recipient, including that CSV must be credited in the work and promotional materials, using mutually acceptable language. CSV digital logos are available for this purpose.
- The artist must submit a report including a financial summary after completing the project, and include a downloadable link or digital copy of the production, together with any related information (e.g. where the work may have played, promo materials developed, festival invitations, etc.).
- The award can only be intended for the submitted project. It must be used before April 15, 2025. Used funds/credits will be withdrawn after this date.
- 50% of the artist fee will be paid upon CSV and the artist's signing of the letter-of-agreement (subject only to revenue confirmation as outlined in the budget requirements section above).
- The final 50% of the artist fee will be paid upon completion of the work.
- CSV assumes the right to use the work, stills and/ or project information for promotional purposes and in organisational funding applications. CSV will endeavour to assign appropriate credit in all instances.
- Equipment credits may not be transferred to any other member or project, and may be used exclusively for equipment rental.
