BIOGRAPHY
Storyline Entertainment’s CEO Ed Barreveld is a veteran of the Canadian film andtelevision industry who honed his filmmaking skills at the National Film Board of Canada. Post NFB, he line produced independent documentaries for broadcasters such as CBC, BBC, A&E and History TV, before co-founding Storyline Entertainment in 2000 for its inaugural release Aftermath: The Remnants of War, a double Gemini Award nominee. Since 2004 he has been Storyline’s sole principal, creating an international profile for the company with auteur driven social/political point of viewdocumentaries and distinctive history programming.
As a producer, in addition to developing young talent, Barreveld has worked with some of Canada’s finest filmmakers and has forged partnerships with co-producers and investors in Germany, Belgium, Australia, Greece and the United States, creating a critically acclaimed body of work. Barreveld’s films have sold to broadcasters such as ZDF, ARTE, Channel 4, PBS, National Geographic, have shown at major festivals such as Tribeca, Hot Docs, IDFA, TIFF and have garnered many awards, including Gemini Awards for Shipbreakers (2005) and Tiger Spirit (2009), a Canadian Screen Award for The Real Inglorious Bastards (2014), a 2014 Emmy Award for Herman’s House and a 2014 Emmy nomination for The World Before Her. The World Before Her has played at over 125 film festivals worldwide; has won or was nominated for 15 awards, winning best documentary prizes at 2012 Tribeca and Hot Docs; and was included in TIFF’s 2012 Top Ten Canadian Films list. The World Before Her and Herman’s House were broadcast on PBS’ 2013 POV strand and released theatrically in Canada and the United States. In 2013, three Storyline films, The Market, Lone Twin and The World Before Her, received four Canadian Screen Awards nominations, each receiving a best picture nomination in its respective category (documentary, feature documentary, social/political). In 2014 three Storyline films, The Real Inglorious Bastards, The Real Sherlock Holmes and Herman’s House, received 8 Canadian Screen Awards nominations, each receiving a best picture nomination in its respective category (history, arts, social/political) with The Real Inglorious Bastards winning the best history program award. In 2013 and 2014 the industry publication Realscreen named Storyline Entertainment a Top 100 global producer of non-fiction. Barreveld is currently producing the feature documentary League of Exotique Dancers, executive producing the feature documentary Shadow Girl, a treaty coproduction with Chile and developing Can Women Fight?, a treaty co-production with Israel, In 2014 Storyline will release The Deeper They Bury Me, a web based interactive project produced for the National Film Board.
