CSV On The Move

Toronto Media Arts Cluster TMAC

Since June, 2011, personnel representing CSV have been intensely involved in discussions that are now leading to the construction of a new, Queen Street West arts facility. TMAC, which stands for Toronto Media Arts Cluster, is an organization of organizations, including CSV, Canadian Filmmakers Distribution Centre (CFMDC), Images Festival, Inter Access, le Labo and Toronto Photographers Workshop (TPW). The facility we are helping to create will be brand new and purpose-built to our design. It will feature exhibition, production, office, workshop, and storage space for the six founding organizations, as well as a yet-to-be-determined number of other organizations or small businesses. TMAC will have a 200-seat cinema, an event space, and a ground-floor café that will face a park extending north to Queen Street.

This is a tremendously exciting project, the genesis for which goes back many years (perhaps one day, someone will write the history...). The major parties involved are TMAC, the City of Toronto and UrbanCorp, this latter being the developer of the twin-towered condominium ("Edge") in which TMAC will 'float' on the second and third floors. But TMAC is no mere condo-owner; the facility will be completely separate from the condos beside and above, will have its own entrances, elevators and loading dock, and will be soundproofed from the residential areas of the building. TMAC will own the space, and that represents a first for all of the venerable arts organizations involved.

The building is scheduled to open Spring 2015.   We'll post updates here.
