ImagineNATIVE / CSV Residency Program

Are you an Indigenous mid-career or senior video artist/filmmaker looking to deepen your knowledge of video making through the creation of a new work? imagineNATIVE and Charles Street Video present an exciting opportunity to expand your familiarity with new film and video technologies and processes.

This residency is an opportunity to create a new short work (5-10 mins) to premiere at the 19th annual imagineNATIVE Film + Media Arts Festival (October 17-21, 2018). After the festival, you will also have the opportunity to deliver a workshop/artist talk to CSV and imagineNATIVE members that details your work and creative process.

The recipient of the residency will be provided with a one-year CSV “All In” Membership (see details here: hhtps://charlesstreetvideo.com/membership) and be eligible to enroll in any production and post-production training workshop that’s offered during their residency. The recipient will also be paired with CSV’s knowledgeable staff to provide advice and assistance through the development, production and post-production stages of the project. CSV will also be providing $3500 worth of access to equipment and facilities, as well as a $300 artist fee to aid in the production of the residency recipient’s work.

imagineNATIVE will contribute $1,000 CAD as a commission fee towards the project and provide the recipient with social media support for the project. imagineNATIVE will also provide the recipient with an Artist Pass for the 19th annual imagineNATIVE film + media arts festival which allows the pass holder to attend all social events, screenings and Industry programming offered during the festival. All rights to the created work will be retained by the artist.

Please Note: We welcome projects of any subject matter or treatment that further develops your artistic practice. However, projects must be realistic in scope within the services provided by the residency and must be completed and delivered in one of the available exhibition formats to imagineNATIVE by September 9, 2018.

Eligibility Criteria:
• This call is open to Indigenous (status and non-status First Nations, Métis, & Inuit as well as all other international Indigenous Nations) candidates only
• Individuals who will be working on existing commissions received by or through imagineNATIVE for the 2018 festival are not eligible to apply for this project.
• Preference will be given to mid-career and senior artists. Emerging artists may apply if they have completed a minimum of 2 completed and presented video projects
• Candidates are strongly encouraged to attend CSV training workshops (schedule to be determined upon selection). We strongly encourage applicants who are independent, deadline-driven and self-starters
• You must live in Toronto or within commuting distance from the city in order to access CSV workshops and equipment. Travel subsidy and cost of living are NOT covered by this mentorship

Your Application Must Include:
• One to one-and-a-half page short video idea and treatment between 5 and 10 minutes (max).
• A half to one-page statement on why you would like to participate and how you would benefit from this residency
*Please Note: with the spirit of Indigenous oral storytelling in mind, the first two (2) components of the application can alternatively be submitted as a 5 min (max) video via private YouTube or Vimeo link*
• Your bio (no resumes or CVs please). Please be certain to indicate past experience with video and other artistic mediums, if any, and your Indigenous heritage
• One to two samples of previous video work as online links or DVD (please contact csv@imaginenative.org if this is your preference) of maximum 20 minutes in length
