Fig Trees (excerpt)

(The sixth room)

Director

John Greyson

FIG TREES (The sixth room) is a short excerpt from a video-opera work-in-progress by John Greyson and David Wall. Four reluctant 'saints' testify in song to a court of the spanish inquisition, admitting their guilt but refusing martyrdom and the ominous halos that await them. Each split-screen also features one of the four methods of execution used on jews, whores and sodomites: the garrot, the sword, drowning or the pyre. A trans-historical interrogation of the seductions and dangers of martyrdom and sodomy, intended as a response to the Gertrude Stein avant-garde opera Four Saints in Three Acts.
