What makes a movie feel the way it does? How and when are the creative decisions made that determine its look, how the camera moves, the tone and texture of an image? Its suspense, humour, drama. As a director, working with a DOP is a nuanced and exciting relationship that is a cornerstone of a film. It can be immensely creatively fulfilling, but also, prove daunting if you are not yet familiar with the fundamentals of visual storytelling. This workshop is aimed at providing participants with a crash course in what’s good to know and think about when crafting the vision, look and feel of your film with your DOP. It will also cover finding a DOP for a project, things to consider when looking for the right creative fit, and how to navigate interpersonal dynamics that can arise when working in a collaborative medium.
