Directing Actors

Sat 25 October 2025
11:00am - 1:00pm

This two-hour workshop offers filmmakers an inside look at the art of working with actors. Drawing from my own experience in directing, I will share practical insights on building trust, shaping performances, and finding the balance between vision and collaboration. We will also cover the essentials every director should know: communication tools, rehearsal techniques, and strategies for guiding actors on set. Participants will leave with a deeper understanding of how to create authentic performances and a more confident approach to working with actors.

Instructor: Marjan Hashemi

Marjan Hashemi was born and raised in Tehran, Iran. Before she moved to Canada in 2019, she completed her bachelor’s degree in English literature and then obtained a master’s degree in psychology. She then went on to study acting for theatre. Before she found her true passion in writing and directing, she had a career in acting and acted in short films and tv series. She took part in screenwriting and directing workshops offered by Asghar Farhadi and enhanced her knowledge of the craft. She made her first short film “Chromatic” in 2017, which was nominated for Best International short film at World of Women Film Festival in Dubai. She continued writing, producing, and directing shorts that were showcased in festivals around the world, and in 2021, Origami won the best international short film at Jakarta International Film Festival. She instructs screenwriting, acting, and directing workshops and also has a career in casting. She values themes such as freedom, love, human bond, women’s rights, and social justice in her works and is keen on the study of characters. In Canada, she studied advanced film and TV at Sheridan College and made two short films; Out of Bounds and The Laundromat. Out of Bounds is a short doc that narrates the story of a Toronto-based female Iranian singer who had to immigrate because she was banned to sing in her homeland. Her upcoming project as a co-writer and director is called Ostracized and will be shot in the summer of 2023 in London, UK.
