While doing my residency at CSV, I learned about a controversial project they helped with in the 1990’s- a film called Bubbles Galore, funded by the Canada Council. Billed as a “feminist sex fantasy” and starring adult industry superstars Annie Sprinkle and Nina Hartley, Bubbles Galore was widely panned for its graphic, fully explicit s/x scenes and campy production. Critics said the film was “government funded p/rn”, and Bubbles Galore was brought to parliament in an attempt to argue (unsuccessfully in this case) for cutting arts funding across Canada. I love this story- so much of my work has referenced the iconic Jacobellis VS Ohio, “I know it when I see it” case, and this feels like the Canadian system’s direct equivalent. With Ontario arts funding under threat and obscenity laws being used to justify increasingly inhumane policing, it feels more relevant than ever. I’ll be doing a two part online screening- one streaming May 18th at 6pm and one in June (date TBA), of different parts of the film- expanding on the backlash and welcoming *special guests* for conversation. This is such a special film to me, and it’s almost impossible to find anymore. A true rare gem of Canadian art and adult industry history. I hope you join me in watching and discussing it!
